Chapter 4 - The Public FallThe grand ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental was packed with New York’s elite society, high-profile investors, and international media outlets. Flashbulbs popped blindingly as the city's most influential figures gathered for the annual Metropolitan Design and Real Estate Gala. For months, the buzz of the evening had been centered around Brandon Vance and his upcoming real estate acquisitions.

Instead, the night belonged entirely to Emma Moretti.
When the heavy double doors at the front of the ballroom opened, a hush fell instantly over the room of five hundred people. Cameras pivoted in unison. Emma walked down the grand staircase on the arm of her father, Vincent Moretti, whose legendary reputation in the old guard of New York business immediately commanded absolute silence.
Emma wore a custom midnight-blue velvet gown that swept the floor, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant chignon, and around her neck hung a breathtaking diamond and sapphire necklace that practically screamed old money and untouchable power.
Whispers rippled through the crowd.
"Isn't that Brandon Vance's wife?"
"Where is Brandon? Didn't the SEC freeze his accounts yesterday?"
"Look at who she came with... that's Vincent Moretti. She's a Moretti?!"
Emma stepped up to the podium, her voice ringing crystal clear through the state-of-the-art sound system. She didn't look nervous; every movement was a masterclass in poise and absolute authority.
"Good evening," Emma began, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. "A few days ago, I was reminded of a very valuable lesson. People often mistake kindness for weakness, and they confuse a partner's loyalty for a lack of identity. They look at someone who builds, who creates, who nurtures, and they assume that because that person stands quietly in the background, they are nothing without the noise around them."
In the back of the room, standing near the service doors, stood Brandon Vance. He looked ten years older, wearing an off-the-rack suit that didn't fit him quite right, his face still bearing the faint, yellowish bruising from where Tony’s men had escorted him off the premises earlier that week. He had snuck in using an old press pass, desperate to understand how his entire life had vanished in less than seventy-two hours.
"Tonight," Emma continued, her eyes sweeping across the audience before locking dead on Brandon’s terrified face in the back, "I am officially announcing the acquisition and complete restructuring of the former Vance Holdings midtown portfolio. Through Moretti-Vance Global Properties—soon to be renamed solely as Moretti Architectural Group—we are injecting five hundred million dollars into urban redevelopment. We are building a new standard of excellence in this city. And to those who believed they could tear down my foundation, I have only one thing to say:"
She paused, offering a brilliant, chilling smile.

"Thank you for clearing the land."
Thunderous applause erupted through the ballroom. Hundreds of investors stood to their feet, rising to applaud her vision, her strength, and her absolute dominance. Flashbulbs blinded Brandon as he tried to retreat toward the exit, only to find two of Vincent’s security personnel blocking the doorway, smiling coldly.
