Chapter 5 - Reckoning at the GatesThree weeks later, the brisk autumn wind whipped through the gates of the Westchester mansion. The property no longer belonged to Brandon Vance; it had been seized by federal asset forfeiture and promptly bought out at auction by a Moretti shell company for a fraction of its value.

Brandon stood by the side of the country road, his last remaining cardboard box resting on the hood of a rented sedan. Ashley was nowhere to be found—she had packed her things and vanished the moment the federal indictments dropped, realizing there was no money left to leech onto.

A sleek black Maybach rolled smoothly up the driveway, stopping right beside him. The tinted window rolled down slowly, revealing Emma sitting in the back seat, wearing dark oversized sunglasses and looking entirely untouchable.

Brandon swallowed hard, taking a desperate step toward the car. "Emma... please," he pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "Just five minutes. Talk to me. We had ten years—"

Emma lowered her sunglasses just enough to look at him with utter, chilling indifference.

"Ten years," Emma said quietly, her voice devoid of any warmth or anger. "And the only true thing you ever said to me was right before you locked me in that basement."

Brandon flinched. "I was angry... I didn't mean—"

"No, you meant every word," Emma interrupted coldly. "You believed I was nothing without you. You forgot that the only reason anyone in this town ever took a meeting with 'Brandon Vance' was because my father's shadow was standing behind you keeping you safe."

"Your father ruined me," Brandon choked out, tears of humiliation finally spilling over his cheeks. "He took everything!"

"My father didn't take anything," Emma replied, her voice sharpening like a scalpel. "He just stopped holding up a man who couldn't stand on his own two feet. You broke my ribs, Brandon. You thought you could lock me in the dark and throw away the key. But all you did was teach me how to break out."

She raised her hand, tapping the driver's partition. The window began to slide upward, cutting off Brandon's frantic appeals.

"Goodbye, Brandon," Emma whispered as the glass sealed shut.

The Maybach glided forward, leaving Brandon standing alone on the cold asphalt as the heavy iron gates swung closed behind him for the very last time.
